Location Overview
Located in Bristol, Frenchay Specialist Rehabilitation Centre is the only intensive hospital-level neurological rehabilitation service of its kind in the South West, supporting people recovering from brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke and other complex neurological conditions. Our consultant-led interdisciplinary team, led by Dr Mohamed Sakel, provides both Level 1 regional specialist rehabilitation for those in the early stages of recovery, and Level 2 rehabilitation for people with ongoing or less complex needs.
We offer flexible, personalised rehabilitation programmes tailored to each person’s pace and goals, including high-intensity daily therapy, 24-hour nursing and specialist clinical care, and access to a full multidisciplinary team. Patients benefit from independent living flats to help build confidence and support a smooth transition home or into the community.
The purpose-built centre spans two specialist buildings with 52 beds, making it one of the UK’s largest neurological rehabilitation centres. Facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, two gymnasiums, a therapy kitchen, private gardens, and five day rooms for community and social activity. Frenchay is a Headway Outstanding accredited provider, reflecting its excellence in specialist brain injury care.

Patient Story: Matt’s Story
"I wouldn't be where I am today without the input from the staff – everyone was helpful and friendly and always had time for me. I felt as though everyone was focused on my rehabilitation and encouraged me every step of the way. It's been a long journey (and it's not over yet), but now I can take care of myself with little input from others and I'm back at work and enjoying playing board games with friends again.
Matt suffered a life-changing brain injury following a haemorrhagic stroke, leaving him unable to walk and with no function in his left arm. He underwent intensive rehabilitation at Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre, where specialist support helped him regain movement and independence beyond what doctors had expected. Determined and resilient, Matt left Frenchay walking again with the aid of a quad stick, with his left-side deficit greatly improved, and has since returned to work and his everyday life.

Each purpose-built space is designed to feel homely, helping individuals achieve the best possible outcomes, whatever recovery looks like for them.
Our services are located within local communities, offering easy access to everyday amenities, education, work opportunities, and social activities. Facilities include accessible en-suite bedrooms with ceiling track hoists, bright and spacious therapy gyms, communal lounges and dining areas, and beautifully landscaped gardens that promote wellbeing and relaxation.
To deliver cutting-edge care, we’ve also invested in advanced robotic and assistive technologies that support data-driven, measurable therapy. From hydrotherapy pools and therapy kitchens to dedicated rooms for music and activity-based rehabilitation, every element of our services is designed to support progress and independence.
